A HEALTHY MARRIAGE STARTS WITH A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

Welcome to Healthy Marriage MATTERS (HMM)

HMM is a “Healthy Marriage Demonstration Program” grant (CFDA #93.086) awarded to CJH Educational Grant Services, Inc. (Raleigh) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Family Assistance.  The five-year initiative (2006-2011) will serve youth and families in rural, northeastern North Carolina counties by:

  1. engaging in a media campaign on the benefits of marriage to children and the community,

  2. promoting a high school curriculum and courses tailored to developing positive relationships , and

  3. partnering with local community networks and faith-based organizations (CBO/FBOs) and state agencies to:

a) carry out the project mission,

b)  develop, improve, or recommend policies, and

c) capture best practices.

Domestic Violence prevention is a major program activity.

Selected counties are: Edgecombe, Halifax, Vance, Northampton, and Warren.

CJH has engaged many partnering agencies including marriage education specialists to work together to reduce poverty through this project and engage youth in healthy marriage activities.  (See ‘Partners’)

What is a "Healthy Marriage?"

“There are at least two (2) characteristics that all healthy marriages have in common.  First, they are mutually enriching, and second, both spouses have a deep respect for each other.  It is a relationship that is committed to ongoing growth, the use of effective communication skills and the use of successful conflict management skills.” (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/healthymarriage/about/mission.html#ms)
